The following project was to refurbish and aesthetically improve the jetty area adjacent to ‘The Longholme’ Café where boat & bike hire is available during spring and summer months in the centre of Bedford. Perfect for a day out with friends or family. The shallow lake is set on 5.8 acres and boasts plentiful wildlife with islands reserved for nesting.
The works involved the removal of the existing jetty platform & surroundings, the installation of new concrete bases, bearers, platform decking & the reinstatement of the surrounding area whilst ensuring minimal environmental impact during the process.
The scheme included the following activities:
- Uplift and removal of existing jetty platform.
- Uplift of existing footway in surrounding area.
- Uplift and replacement of vertical timber posts.
- Excavation and casting of new concrete bases.
- Footway surfacing.
- Installation of new timber bearers & platform decking.
Communication was paramount during the works with both the Client, members of the public and the resident café owner to ensure business could be run with minimal disruption during an exceptionally warm spell in the year.
Through clear communication we developed a plan to maintain safe access and egress for members of the public & the café during our work, speaking regularly and opening opportunities to raise any concerns or issues.
Specific elements to the works were scheduled to minimise disruption and completed during quieter times in the day, for example disc cutting and the use of whacker plates & rollers.
All complete in preparation for the 40th anniversary of the Bedford River Festival, 2018.
